The New Saints' scrum-half Archie McParland is on the verge of a full England debut, having impressed in the club's league fixture against Bath and the Champions Cup quarter-final against Leicester. McParland, who has been training well, has been encouraged by his coaches to follow his gut instinct and has been able to show his game more and more since a pivotal league fixture at the Recreation Ground. In the sixth minute of the Champions Cup quarter-final in April, McParland made a glorious one-handed flick on to Fin Smith, which was followed by great support from Tommy Freeman and Fraser Dingwall. The Saints lost the thrilling contest 43-41, but McParland's attacking game was untouchable. Northampton are currently without their injured England scrum-half Alex Mitchell, but McParland poses a similarly lethal threat. Excellent spatial awareness, a constant sniping threat, and clever support play make him a nine who makes things happen, according to Saints' head coach Sam Vesty. McParland also comes from a family accustomed to operating under pressure, with his mother Emma being a maxillofacial surgeon at Glan Clwyd hospital near Rhyl. Despite growing up in north Wales, McParland has always craved an England cap and is now on the verge of achieving his dream.
