The New Saints' Transfer Window Update: Eckert on Replacing Shea Charles
The New Saints are not planning to do much more business in the transfer window, but do intend on bringing in a replacement for Shea Charles. Charles completed a move to Premier League side Fulham earlier this week for a fee in the region of £30million.
The midfielder was a regular in Eckert's side last season and leaves behind a gap in the middle of the park. Asked if Saints plan to replace Charles, the German simply said: "Yes."
Eckert also discussed plans for potential transfer activity, stating: "Not a lot. I think it's quite similar to when we talked in January, that I prefer the squad to be rather smaller than bigger and everyone that we sign just needs to be spot on."
Rumours have also emerged in Portugal this week suggesting that giants Benfica are interested in defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis. It doesn't sound as though a deal will be pursued at this stage, but Eckert was asked whether speculation this week regarding his future has affected the 24-year-old.
"He is exactly the same and he was exactly the same today in training," the Saints boss insisted. "I think I think every transfer window brings you those moments and I think it's not just Taylor, I think there were a few players that have just performed on a very high level last year and I think it's normal that this just attracts some interest."
The New Saints are currently 22 points clear at the top of the Cymru Premier table, having scored 81 goals and conceded 25, with a goal difference of +56. They have won their last three games and are unbeaten in their last five.
Their next fixture is against Colwyn Bay at home on August 28.
